Laksa Ayam Jakarta – Chicken Coconut Milk Soup Recipe

The weather is getting cold, the snow is falling, and people are trying to stay warm. It is wintertime in Minnesota, and most definitely a perfect time to cook up a batch of laksa ayam Jakarta (chicken coconut milk soup). Spicy hot soup is just the perfect remedy for cold weather, don’t you think? 🙂 Serve this spicy chicken soup with some boiled rice vermicellis (Indonesian: bihun rebus) or steamed white rice (Indonesian: nasi putih) and be ready for a second or third helping.

Laksa Ayam – Chicken Coconut Milk Soup

What is laksa?

Laksa is a spicy noodle soup dish popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Southern Thailand. This dish is particularly popular among Chinese descent and is one of the more popular dishes of Peranakan cuisine. Since laksa is such a popular dish in so many different countries, each country, and even each region within a country, has its own distinct variety of laksa. Just in Indonesia alone, we have laksa Medan, laksa Palembang, laksa Bogor, laksa Tangerang, and laksa Jakarta. The laksa recipe I share today is the one that is popular in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia.

What ingredients do I need to prepare laksa ayam Jakarta (Jakarta style chicken laksa)?

Laksa Jakarta, similar to other laksa varieties, is full of spices and herbs, and we will indeed be using plenty of those. First, there’s the laksa spice paste, which is made from:

  • shallots
  • garlic
  • ginger
  • ground coriander
  • ground turmeric
  • ground cumin
  • ebi (dried tiny shrimps)
  • red chilies, I only use Fresno chilies, but you can also add bird-eye chilies for a spicier laksa

Then, we will also need these to complete the laksa:

  • chicken breast/thigh, we are making chicken laksa after all
  • chicken stock
  • coconut milk
  • lemongrass
  • kaffir lime leaves
  • scallions/green onions
  • coriander leaves

Laksa Ayam – Chicken Coconut Milk Soup

What is ebi and how do I use this?

Ebi is dried tiny shrimps. You may have spotted these sold in little plastic packets in the refrigerated section in your Asian/Chinese market. These little guys will add so much flavor to your soup, and to be honest, laksa Jakarta just doesn’t taste quite right without them.

How do I use ebi?

To use ebi, simply measure the needed amount, then wash and soak in cold water until slightly puffy and soft. Then you can ground this with the rest of the spice paste ingredients in a blender/food processor to make the laksa spice paste.

Soto Betawi – Jakarta Beef Soup Recipe

Ingredients to prepare Indonesian soto betawi (Jakarta beef soup): beef stew cuts, honeycomb tripe, shalots, garlic, ginger, galangal, candlenuts, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and coconut milk.

Soto (traditional Indonesian soup) is widely enjoyed throughout Indonesia and every region has its own specialty soto. In Jakarta, the de facto soto is soto betawi, where it can be found everywhere, from side street food carts, hole-in-a-wall places, food courts in malls, upscale restaurants, all the way to five-star hotels.

Each place will have their own way of preparing soto betawi, with a highly guarded blend of secret spices, and each with fierce die-hard fans touting theirs has got be the one offering the most original and most delicious soto betawi.

What you need to prepare authentic Indonesian soto betawi

Living half-way across the globe means I need to find an excellent soto betawi recipe that can satisfy me and my hubby love for this soup. I am proud to say that we are extremely happy with this particular recipe. The soup tastes exactly like the one we used to have back in Indonesia.

Here are the ingredients I use for my soto betawi:

  • 1 kilogram beef shank (Indonesian: daging sengkel), or you can use other cuts that are suitable for stew or soup
  • 500 gram honeycomb tripe or other beef entrails like intestines, or increase the amount of beef if you want to omit this
  • 5 lemongrass
  • 5 kaffir lime leaves
  • 3 daun salam (Indonesian bay leaves), these are not the same as regular bay leaves, and is best to omit if you don’t have them
  • fresh milk
  • coconut milk
  • shallots
  • garlic
  • ginger
  • galangal
  • candlenuts, can be substituted with an equal amount of macadamia nuts

Cooking the soup

Before cooking the soup, the very first thing we do is to prepare the spice paste. You can use a food processor or a blender to do this. If you want a truly smooth paste, please add about 2 tablespoons of water along with all the spices, but it is also okay if the spice paste is not very smooth.

Once the spice paste is ready, you can do the following to cook the soup:

  1. Boil together beef, tripes, lemongrass, daun salam, fresh milk, and spice paste over medium-high heat in a soup pot. Once it boils, reduce the heat to a simmer, cover, and cook until both the meat and tripe are tender. About 2 hours.
TIPS: If using a pressure cooker, this step will only take 30 minutes.
  2. Remove the meat and tripe from the pot to cool. Once they are cool enough to handle, cut into bite-size pieces.
Optional step: Strain the soup to remove any impurities and scums to get a clear soup, then return the strained soup to the soup pot.
  3. Return the pieces of meat and tripe into the soup pot, add water, coconut milk, salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for another 30 minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat, discard lemongrass and daun salam. Stir in kaffir lime leaves.
Garnishes for soto betawi: emping (melinjo crackers), fried potato cubes, bawang goreng (fried shallots), scallions, freshly squeezed lime juice, diced tomatoes, kecap manis (not shown), and acar (not shown).

What to serve with soto betawi

Soto betawi is never just about the soup. It is not considered complete if you don’t serve the soup with its accompaniments. I usually prepare all of these while the soup is slowly simmering away:

  • make some acar (Indonesian pickle)
  • fry potato cubes
  • fry emping (melinjo crackers)
  • fry shallots (Indonesian: bawang goreng), you can use store-bought too
  • thinly slice some scallions
  • dice a couple of fresh tomatoes
  • cut a couple of limes into slices, so each person can add squeeze some fresh lime juice into the soup to suit their taste

We usually enjoy our soto betawi with some steamed white rice, all the above accompaniments, and a bottle of kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce).

No. 23 Oolong Macchiato with Tea Cream IDR 31k (R)/ IDR 37k (L)

Traveled far from Singapore, R&B Tea is finally here in Indonesia! Their first outlet is situated in Emporium Pluit Mall, Jakarta.

Cheese Brulee Brown Sugar Pearl Fresh Milk IDR 38k (R), Grape Yogi IDR 43k (L)

Open for public starting from 4th July, some of you might be familiar with this brand already if you have travelled to Singapore recently.

Our first experience with R&B Tea was last year and we can easily agree that they serve great brown sugar boba milk drink. The tea cafe offers wide ranges of tea based drinks.

Cheese Brulee Brown Sugar Pearl Fresh Milk IDR 38k (R), Devil’s Booster IDR 43k (L)

We’re still in quarantine mode and have the drinks delivered to our place. Here are some of the signature that we tried.

Devil’s Booster IDR 43k (L)
Pineapple, yuzu, sunkist orange, peach oolong
For refreshing citrusy drink, they have this one, it’s more on the sweet side and not sour. We can say that the it’s a refreshing fruity combination that simply cannot go wrong, we have no complain about it but it didn’t leave any deep impression.

Grape Yogi IDR 43k (L), Devil’s Booster IDR 43k (L)

Grape Yogi IDR 43k (L)
This one is rather unique because they combine tea and yoghurt. Yupsss tea infused grape drink with yoghurt, chewy crystal jelly, soft grape jelly. The best way to enjoy it is by mixing it well. The taste is somewhere between fruity light and creamy yoghurt, unique but a bit confusing.

No. 23 Oolong Macchiato with Tea Cream IDR 31k (R)/ IDR 37k (L)
Our second top fav! Fragrant oolong tea topped with tea cream. Yesss you read it right, TEA CREAM!! The macchiato cream is really good because you get strong tea flavor both from the tea and cream. AnakJajan gotta give them double thumbs up for the tea cream.

No. 23 Oolong Macchiato with Tea Cream IDR 31k (R)/ IDR 37k (L)
No. 23 Oolong Macchiato with Tea Cream IDR 31k (R)/ IDR 37k (L)

Cheese Brulee Brown Sugar Pearl Fresh Milk IDR 38k (R)
Last but not least, the most popular drink that happens to be our favorite. Fresh milk drink with brown sugar pearl and cheese cream with caramelized brown sugar. The cream cheese brulee is really good, it gives the drink a nice creamy salty taste and caramelized burnt aroma on the drink. We usually sip the brulee first, then eat the brown sugar boba on its own before mixing it well.

Cheese Brulee Brown Sugar Pearl Fresh Milk IDR 38k (R)
Cheese Brulee Brown Sugar Pearl Fresh Milk IDR 38k (R)

We gotta say that the one in Indonesia tastes as good as Singapore’s. It got us slurping non stop, perfect level of creaminess with soft and slightly chewy brown sugar boba texture.

Cheese Brulee Brown Sugar Pearl Fresh Milk IDR 38k (R)

Overall, Cheese Brulee Brown Sugar Pearl Fresh Milk and No. 23 Oolong Macchiato with Tea Cream are both our top favs, give it a try and let us know what do you think about it? 🙂

WOLFGANG’S STEAKHOUSE – SCBD, Jakarta, Indonesia

Porterhouse for Two IDR 1,800k

After New York, Miami, Tokyo, Seoul, Manila, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, etc, Wolfgang’s Steakhouse Jakarta by Wolfgang Zwiener is now open in Jakarta. Located at Elysee Mall SCBD rooftop floor, it is an interesting addition to Jakarta’s food scene especially for meat/ steak lovers.

Steak Garlic Rice IDR 220k

Our visit to Wolfgang’s Steakhouse Jakarta was a few months ago, precisely on March 2020 for Mr. Jajan’s birthday celebration. I chose this restaurant because Mr. Jajan loves good quality of steak, special person deserves special treat❤️

We heard that the restaurant is always full so we called the restaurant to make reservation in advance.

During our visit on March 2020, the restaurant was still on soft opening phase if we’re not mistaken because that’s how it felt like, even though the waiters were polite, the service was kinda messy, we were seated for quite a long time without given menu and we can see the staff were overwhelmed.

Menu selection is quite simple: appetizer, soup, salad, prime steak, seafood, sides. The food gladly didn’t take long to be served after ordering.

welcome bread

Steak Garlic Rice IDR 220k
This one is a must order side dish. The rice was cooked to perfection, not mushy with each grain perfectly separated. Seasoning was amazing, savory and buttery but not too heavy seriously so good we enjoyed it until the last spoonful. Chunks of beef were tender and the addition of garlic flakes were genius.

Steak Garlic Rice IDR 220k

German Potatoes IDR 120k
Simple, tasty, pricey. It’s basically grilled potatoes with onion, seasoning was spot on and the potatoes were cooked nicely, soft with nice char on the outside, however the amount of onion was just too little, as you can see from the pictures below.

German Potatoes IDR 120k

Porterhouse for Two IDR 1,800k
Ok, let’s talk about the steak, it was the main reason we visit the restaurant (of course!). The primesteak is USDA prime and they dry aged the beef in their own aging box. Me and Mr. Jajan opted for Porterhouse for Two, we can choose the steak doneness but it’s highly recommended to get medium rare doneness in order to get best flavor of the meat.

Porterhouse for Two IDR 1,800k

The steak was served on sizzling hot plate, similar style with Ruth’s Chris Steak House. AnakJajan gotta admit that their steak was superb, tender and really pack a punch! Super tasty you don’t need any sauce, just a little pinch of salt would be enough. 100% APPROVED!

Porterhouse for Two IDR 1,800k

Since we were already really full, we decided to skip dessert. For sweet ending, they offer a few selection of menu like cheesecake, key lime pie, hot fudge sundae, etc.

Overall, as the name suggests, steak is surely their main star, hopefully they’ve improved their services right now coz they serve one of the best steak in town we must say.

As you can see from the packaging, it looks like travel bag with luggage tag because we want to invite you all to join a virtual trip to Korea through our exclusive menu.

Finally these toast creations are ready for you all to try thanks to Boja Eatery for making this collaboration project happen.

After long trial and error, the product is ready to be launched on August 23rd 2020. #AnakJajanxBoja menu is ready both for dine-in and delivery (GrabFood: Boja – Pluit, GoFood: JAJAN di BOJA Pluit, Tokopedia for H+1 preorder https://www.tokopedia.com/bojatogo )
(please note that there might be price difference for GrabFood & GoFood delivery)

Hongdae Toast IDR 59k

In total there are 3 toast creations and 3 types of drinks and it will be available for limited period of time. Let’s take a closer look shall we? 🙂

DRINKS
Kedongdaemun Juice IDR 35k, Gangnam Beauty IDR 35k, Coffee Drip IDR 25k/pack or 60k/3packs
There are two perfect companion for toast in our opinions. First is refreshing sweet and sour drink like pink lemonade or Gangnam Beauty and kedondong juice or Kedongdaemun Juice.

Second is coffee of course!! You can experience brewing your own coffee with this instant coffee drip, it can be enjoyed hot or with ice.
Please note that instant coffee drip has no sugar and no milk in it, you can enjoy it as it is or add sugar according to your tastebud.

TOAST
Hongdae Toast IDR 59k
Ok, let’s start with this one, meatless version with hashbrown as the main ingredient.
The bread is toasted with butter until golden with thick layer of ingredients such as Korean omelette, cheese, honey garlic butter, and lots of love 🙂

Hongdae Toast IDR 59k

It is the most simple toast creation but packed with all kind flavors, savory, cheesy creamy buttery but not too much, and… also a subtle hint of sweetness.

Hongdae Toast IDR 59k

You can also order Toast Package with drink: Hongdae Toast + Kedongdaemun Juice/ Gangnam Beauty IDR 85k, or Hongdae Toast + Coffee Drip IDR 75k.

Myeongdong Toast IDR 79k
Myeongdong Toast uses bratwurst sausage. You will get juicy meaty sensation on each bite, yummm!

Myeongdong Toast IDR 79k

Anyway, each toast will get sweet potato chips as side dish, it gives a nice crunchy sensation. Toast Package with drink is also available for this one: Myeongdong Toast + Kedongdaemun Juice/ Gangnam Beauty IDR 105k, or Myeongdong Toast + Coffee Drip IDR 95k.

Itaewon Toast IDR 89k
Ok, last but not least, the most special and festive one, Itaewon Toast with smoked beef brisket. It has the MOST COMPLEX flavor because we combine lot of different sauces and ingredients such as honey garlic butter, peanut butter, berry jam, etc. Yup you read it right, peanut butter and berry jam 🙂

Itaewon Toast IDR 89k

If you notice, Korean often add a bit of sweet taste in their toast/ sandwich, it makes it really interesting and tasty. Don’t worry it will not taste too sweet at all, you will get just a little hint of nutty and fruity flavors in it, it makes the smoked beef brisket toast not too heavy and packed with flavors. Please give it a try because it’s one of a kind.

Toast package with drink: Itaewon Toast + Kedongdaemun Juice/ Gangnam Beauty IDR 115k, or Itaewon Toast + Coffee Drip IDR 105k.

Who’s excited??? We hope you all enjoy it as much as we do. Get yourself ready because diet is prohibited during these months. Until then, sit back, relax, and enjoy your toast 🙂

MONSIEUR SPOON – urban Farm PIK, Jakarta

The famous French bakery & cafe Monsieur Spoon from Bali is finally open in Jakarta. The first Jakarta outlet is located precisely in Golf Island Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) Jakarta in soon to be hype new area called Urban Farm PIK.

You’ll be surprised by how fancy and large the store is in Jakarta. Unlike Bali’s outlet, the store is quite fancy with all the beautiful details.

img_7853

dscf8655

In the middle of the store there’s huge display showing all their pastries and sweets selection.

As for seating area there are 3 outdoor seating areas on the left side, right side, and also in front of the store. Of course indoor seating area is also available.

While the interior concept is pretty fancy, we can still feel a bit of Bali vibes at the outdoor seating area surrounded by green plants.

img_7838

Normal opening schedule is 07.00-22.30 to cater early breakfast, lunch until late dinner. That explains why Jakarta’s outlet has more brunch and heavy meal selection. The menu are available exclusively for Jakarta’s outlet such as pasta, steak, etc.

dscf8674

Magic Latte IDR 38k & Cappuccino IDR 35k
Both hot coffee are nicely done, great balance, beautiful consistency, we have no complain. If you prefer milky one, Cappuccino will suit your palate, but if you want the coffee to be stronger we advice you to order Magic Latte.

Wagyu Burger Croissant IDR 78k
wagyu beef patty, cheddar cheese, lettuce, caramelized onion
Monsieur Spoon has selection of sandwich with their croissant called croissandwich. This one with beef patty is tasteful with great balance of flavor, you’ll get savory taste from juicy tender beef patty and cheese also sweet taste from caramelized onion.

dscf8670

Wagyu Beef Bourguignon IDR 160k
24hrs slow cooked wagyu beef in red wine sauce, mushroom, served with creamy mashed potato
Not sure if it is appropriate to cook fancy wagyu for that long or to be used for this kind of dish but we have no complain since the beef was very tender with all the seasoning fully absorbed into it, spot on savory rich without being too much. Delicious!

dscf8662

Salted Caramel Tartlet IDR 38k
Of course the famous tartlet is also available. Crunchy buttery tart shell with melt in the mouth sweet salty caramel filling, OOOMMMPHHH YUM!

dscf8679
